Emory University identifies sustainability as a top campus priority, with a vision to help restore the global ecosystem, foster healthy living, and reduce the university's environmental impact. The comprehensive sustainability plan includes initiatives for green building and green space protection, energy awareness, waste minimization, water conservation, sustainable food, sustainable commute options, and encouraging a connection to the natural world. More than half of the campus is protected green space, and among U.S. campuses, Emory has one of the largest inventories (by square footage) of building space that's certified to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. We employ environmentally conscious construction, and operate a robust recycling program to recycle everything from white paper to snack bags to computers…and most things in between.
The university has recently earned awards for its innovative WaterHub, an on-site water reclamation system capable of recycling up to 400,000 gallons of water per day—nearly 40% of Emory’s total campus water needs. Committed action in the energy conservation category led the university to reduce its energy use by 25% from 2005-2015, and we are working toward 75% of the food at campus eateries being local and/or sustainably grown by 2025. Among other “green” accolades, in 2015, BestColleges.com ranked Emory among the top 10 “greenest” universities in the nation. |

At Candler, we prepare real people to make a real difference in the real world. Whether a student is following a call to church ministry, teaching, non-profit leadership, public policy or theological research, there’s an ethos here that what we do will contribute to the positive transformation of the church and the world. As a university-based seminary of The United Methodist Church, Candler is committed to teaching and learning to transform Christian congregations and public life, and to serving God and the world through the formation of leaders dedicated to ministries of justice, righteousness, peace, and the flourishing of all creation. Our vision for leadership is that one leads best by being deeply immersed in a context, learning and understanding its multiple layers and nuances. This is the underlying premise of our extensive Contextual Education program. Through this experience of joining supervised field work, classroom learning, and faculty mentoring, our students develop an enduring, adaptive capacity to apply the theological insights and leadership skills they gain at Candler to any number of ministry contexts to make for a more just and peaceful world. |
